Helmut Krone: The Book

Even today, the aesthetic of ex-DDB ad man Helmut Krone seems fresh. His layouts for clients such as Avis, VW, Porsche, Scotts, and Polaroid (above) continue to inspire many modern day art directors. Bob Gage once said "Among art directors there's Helmut Krone and then there's everyone else". Reading this, you can understand why. Highly recommended by This Is Real Art Creative Director Paul Belford,
Helmut Krone, The Book is a must read for any creative.

Honda Everything

W&K's new TV spot for the Honda Civic, Everything, is once again frustratingly brilliant. It's the craft that's gone into it that makes it so utterly mesmerizing for me. Genuinely original art direction with a wonderful attention to detail which can be seen in everything down to the track, Atlas by Battles, which was rearranged to complement the video editing.

Knocked Up Babymaker

Nice viral idea for the film Knocked Up. The Babymaker. Whack a picture of you and the missus into the mix and watch as a retarded looking nipper appears before your ever so tearful eyes.

Lurpak

I absolutely love everything about this campaign for Lurpak from Wieden & Kennedy London: the strategy, the tone, the writing, the art direction. It's the apotheosis of a big idea. A lesson in advertising for any junior creative.

Strongbow Bankers

A topical addition to the Strongbow Hard Earned ad makes the whole thing a whole lot better. It does make me wonder where this is going to be aired though, as you rarely see people flipping the bird during ad breaks.

The Lost Cat Theory

Interesting post found on the Sell Sell blog called The Lost Cat Theory. Now you can't really argue with the premise behind this, of course all communication should be "simple, compelling and effective", but the outtake seems to stray into a "don't worry if your idea isn't original" territory, which I don't agree with. Nevertheless, definitely worth a read.

Esquire's Augmented Reality Issue

AR this, AR that. Augmented reality is spreading across the creative industries like wildfire at the moment. The latest installment comes from The Barbarian Group and Psyop for Esquire magazine. It all seems very forward thinking, which I absolutely admire, but in this instance, what's the point? If I'm reading a magazine, it's because I'm not at my mac. And if I'm at my mac, I generally don't want to be reading a magazine. Don't get me wrong the synergy is great, but if it doesn't make the magazine itself any better then why not just put the animated content on the website and direct me there to see it? Why do I need to flap around in front of my webcam to see Robert Downey Jr say his hello?

Jonathan Harris on TED

An old TED talk I found by my hero, Jonathan Harris. If you don't know of him already, Harris is a trained computer scientist and considers himself a 'visual storyteller'. Here he introduces Universe, his 2007 project portraying the interconnected nature of both information and indeed reality. Wonderfully existential and, at times, solipsistic, Harris' work is truly inspiring and well worth a look.

EyePet

Demo of the EyePet during the experiential learning workshop at the International Symposium of Mixed and Augmented Reality. Good things are a-coming.

BooneOakley.com

I've been tasked with creating our new agency website, and of course we're after something inventive. You know, all that 'not you're typical agency site' jazz. Which reminded of this little gem I saw a while back for North Carolina agency Boone Oakley. A site made entirely on YouTube.

Dead Fly Art

I really wish I'd thought of this. Very funny, very cool. Reminds me a tad of Modern Toss. From photographer Magnus Muhr, Dead Fly Art.

Social Networking Challenge

I'm putting this up here, one because it's awesome, and two because we presented the exact same idea to BlackBerry two months ago, which we unfortunately couldn't get through their legal team. It's probably best that it didn't however, given that it too would be going live right about now. Nevertheless, some good work from the Viral Factory for the Samsung Corby S3650.

In B Flat

The idea is lovely. The execution is a tad fragile. Thought up by musician Darren Solomon, 'In B Flat' allows lots of different YouTube videos to be played in harmony and mixed by adjusting the volume sliders, sort of.
